Internship Program
How do I Join the Intern Program?
Our Summer Community Engagement Internship builds a culture of diversity and inclusion within the field of health care delivery. Each summer we hire 6 students who are part of communities underrepresented in health care (people of color, LGBTQI+, immigrants, and first-generation college students). By offering this internship as paid, we are able to attract and mentor students who could not commit to unpaid positions.
Our Application is open from December 15 until March 15 at 11:59pm.
-
The interns learn how to provide health screenings, education and referrals on our mobile clinic. They also participate in mentorship and career development opportunities with the intention that it be a launching point for a lifelong journey promoting health equity and serving vulnerable populations.
-
The summer internship has a structured curriculum whereby students study various topics, including but not limited to: identification of social determinants of health, understanding various barriers that contribute to poor health care delivery, screening and education of patients, understanding resources that exist to help marginalized populations, and evaluation of program impact.
-
The main purpose of this initiative is to increase the diversity of healthcare professionals so that the racial/ethnic makeup of healthcare providers reflects the remarkable diversity of the communities The Family Van serves.

“It was amazing to serve my people “mi gente” in my native language. I saw in their faces how happy they were when I said “Yo hablo español”. I completely understand how hard it is for them to get the right help when you do not know English and there is no one to help you in your language. In the East Boston community, I met amazing clients who I feel very good to help them.”
