The Family Van

Partners

Since its inception, our program has worked in partnership with over 100 health and social service agencies.  What follows is a sampling of some of our key partners and a more extensive list of our current collaborations.

Action for Boston Community Development
Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) is a minority community-based organization that was founded in 1962 and has now become the largest human services agency in New England, assisting 100,000 low-income individuals and families each year.  Since 2003, ABCD has collaborated with the Whittier Street Health Center’s Women’s Awareness Resource (WAR) Project, The Family Van, and JSI Research and Training Institute to form Women in Transition: Health and Hope (WITHH).  WITTH is an integrated, multi-agency risk reduction program that combats the twin epidemics of HIV and substance abuse among women of color in Boston.

American Heart Association
Heart disease and stroke are the #1 and #3 killers of women in the United States.  African American women have higher heart disease and stroke risk factors than white women of comparable socioeconomic status. This is the rallying point of two of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) major initiatives, Power to End Stroke and Go Red for Women.  Boston Goes Red for Women is a city-wide campaign to improve women’s heart health through awareness and education.  It occurs in conjunction with the AHA’s Power to End Stroke, which helps African Americans reduce the risks, recognize the signs, and respond quickly in the case of a stroke.

Dimock Community Health Center
In 1862, the New England Hospital for Women and Children debuted as the first hospital in New England and the second hospital in the country that was run by women doctors for women patients.  Now known as Dimock Community Health Center, the institution serves 40,000 families each year from Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, and Jamaica Plain.  As the largest community-based organization in Roxbury, Dimock is a crucial provider of comprehensive, high-quality, and accessible health care, human services, education, and skills development.

Mattapan Community Health Center
Since 1972, the Mattapan Community Health Center has been committed to providing financially, logistically, and culturally appropriate health care to the diverse neighborhoods that it encompasses.  As the only community health center in Mattapan and Hyde Park, MCHC reaches over 7,000 people each year, primarily Black/African Americans. MCHC consistently proves that it is a crucial player in Boston's battle to reduce health disparities and to provide quality care to the underinsured and underserved.

Project Umbrella
The Center for HIV/AIDS Care and Research (CHACR) at Boston Medical Center (BMC) is one of the leading providers of HIV/AIDS care in the country. The CHACR offers a variety of prevention and treatment options for both HIV+ patients and high-risk populations. Project Umbrella is a collaboration between BMC’s CHACR and local community-based organizations, like The Family Van.  Project Umbrella provides client-centered HIV Counseling, Testing and Referral Services in communities disproportionately affected by HIV.
